Come celebrate victory over the World Trade Organization (WTO) with a benefit video screening of Showdown in Seattle: Five Days That Shook the WTO.
Now, for the first time, this historic five part series is being screened in its entirety in San Francisco. The series focuses on the real issues and the articulate protests that exposed the agenda and true nature of the WTO. Showdown in Seattle features an on-the-ground, non-corporate perspective and in-depth analysis you won't find anywhere else, as well as incredible footage of police repression and popular resistance.
Each show focuses on a general theme (Overview, Labor and Human Rights, Women and Development, Agriculture and Environment, and a Wrap-up) while remaining as fluid as the daily protests. The shows are lively and colorful, chock full of footage from the streets and meaningful interviews with protest participants. Critiques of the WTO, the government, and the corporate-owned media round out the shows.
Each half hour show is made up of segments shot and edited on location in downtown Seattle by an unprecedented collaboration of video producers from around the U.S. working under the umbrella of the Independent Media Center (IMC) (www.indymedia.org). Daily segment producers include: Big Noise Productions, Changing America, Headwaters Action Video Collective, Paper Tiger TV, VideoActive, and Whispered Media, working with the footage of several dozen video activists from the IMC.
During the WTO, these shows were aired daily across North America via satellite through Deep Dish TV. Because access to the broadcast was limited, and viewer response has been overwhelming, screenings are being organized across the country. This benefit screening in San Francisco will be the Bay Area's Premiere.
Come see Showdown in Seattle and support the Independent Media Center on Monday, December 20th. Admission is $5 - $50 sliding scale to support free and independent media.
There will be an update and panel discussion from 7-8:00 PM and videos will screen from 8-11:00 PM (with intermission). The panel discussion features local organizers from Global Exchange and Art and Revolution. Whispered Media and other producers of Showdown in Seattle will introduce the video series.
