VAN Email List-Serve

The VAN Email List is a way to stay in touch with other video activists via email without having to address a message to every single person on the list. When you SEND a message to "van-l@tao.ca" it goes out to everyone who has subscribed. And when someone REPLIES to a message that has been sent out on the list, it also goes out to everyone.

This list encourages general dialogue about issues that video activists are concerned with and helps spread news and information that people in the VAN think is relevant to others. It is also used to coordinate local video projects and alert people to video witnessing opportunuties. This list used to be mostly for people in the San Francisco Bay Area, but it has since become wide open to any video activists, new or old.

Good list serve etiquette may also compell members to move certain issues off the list (to be continued directly between those interested individuals) that are not of general interest to the VAN or that include dialogue which may have become redundant or simply insane. There is also a List Master who screens any non-member submissions and can address problems with the list. This way, all kinds of issues may surface on the list without losing the focus on Bay Area video activism.

To VAN Email List is not a general news lists - there are now lots of other ways to get basic news via email!

How to join the VAN E-mail List

To join the VAN list you must send a message to the automated list server by clicking below. The address is lists@tao.ca. Simply write:

subscribe van-l

in the main body of the message, leaving the subject field blank. Remember to turn off any signatures your email program might attach to the end of your message, as the computer will not understand them.

When majordomo gets your request, it will send you 2 messages, one to let you know it got a request from your email address, and another containing a sort of password that you must copy exactly and REPLY to majordomo to confirm that your request is authentic. (This prevents you being signed up without your knowledge).

Then, when you are confirmed, you will get a brief introductory email. Now you will be immediately able to send email to all the other list members and receive their emails when they have been posted to the list.

VAN Bulletin Board

You may also read and write messages on the VAN Bulletin Board. This is an open forum for anyone who wants to discuss video activism and it is not directly related to the Email List Serve. It is especially appropriate for people who are not video activists but have video projects they want to discuss.
