"Here's a benefit for the Video Activist Network's new streaming server, with past and present works on empowerment and autonomy, live agit-video mixology, and free bread and roses for all our brothers and sisters in the struggle. Carla Leshne recaps Film and Photo League history, Jesse Drew unwraps some Paper Tiger archives as well as his recent anti-globalization rant, Andy Cox shares a glimpse of his Guerilla Tea-Room, and IndyMedia's Jeff Perlstein screens the late-breaking direct-action developments in Quebec. Then we'll thrill to the hour-plus set of WM's Reclaim May Day, Anarchy, A World of Resistance, and the Work-In-Progress, BOOM."

May Day Soiree's Elements

The Film and Photo League

- was a radical labor oriented film collective of the 1930's. In New York and in Los Angeles (primarily), they challenged the monopoly that big Hollywood producers had on film distribution and began screening their own newsreels. This night Carla Leshne (of old Papertiger TV and DeepDish fame) will get us started by presenting some labor activist footage of the 1930's.

Paper Tiger TV

- Remains a vital and innovative contributor to the overall videoactivist scene. Many of the key, behind-the-scenes coordinators of recent satellite broadcasts from Seattle and DC are infact, originals from both Paper Tiger TV and Deep Dish TV. People, such as Carla Leshne, Jesse Drew, Dee Dee Halleck, Michael Eisenmenger are among the Paper Tigers who have been producing activist videos since the early 1990's and are engaging in a type of hands-on media literacy that comes about as every-day people start producing their own media. Tonight, as we continue to celebrate the achievements of film and video activism, Jesse Drew will present video and perspectives about the works of visions of Paper Tiger TV.

Andy Cox

- Guerilla-media genius, intellectual stunt-man, culture-jamming wizard - Andy Cox will present examples of recent creative endeavors.

Video Activist Network and SF/IMC Videos

- Segments from May Day celebrations of recent and former years; segments about the recent IMF/WB/WTO protests from Seattle to Prague; segments from recent innaugaural protests and possibly a clip from Quebec's planned meeting of the FTAA - these will follow the historic perpectives on video activism and bring us up to the current day. Locally-based VAN members, Agitspin Productions, will also present short clips: from the bombing of activist Judi Bari - "Redwood Summer", from "Three Days of Rage" (an edit from the Gulf War protests of SF), and from "Farmcore." HAVC might want to show a clip from their new production, "Treesit." And, Whispered Media will show clips from the work-in-progress - "BOOM: The Sound of Eviction." Then, on to less formal and very live ...
