As the Summer of 99 winds down, come enjoy video works of joy, resistance and nudity by Video Artists and Activists - looking to explore the absurd, the celebratory, the transformative nature of late-90's protests.
From Whispered Media, "The Return of the MUD
PEOPLE":
Summer Soltice '99 saw the return of the Mud People
to
San Francisco's financial district. A local video activist was there
and has assembled takes of raw footage of these primeval pranxsters.
Also from Whispered Media,"FREE KPFA":
One event that happened locally this summer, that
has touched a nerve in the slumbering american psyche, was the
removal of Dennis Bernstein from an on-air broadcast at Berkeley's
KPFA. The free-speech movement is
being revitalized and re-defined as hip-hop artists and homeless youths
join in with the
established lefties to demand the return of local control. The
transformation is beginning at KPFA and this new edit reveals
some of the faces behind the voices of freedom and diversity.
Celebratory ravers reclaim the streets, bike activists command psychic powers in their fight against car culture and other short works - all locally and recently produced - will round out this night - all to the flavor of fresh marguaritas - the struggle, and the party, continues.
